HUD is Regulating Radon Lung Cancer, One Home at a Time
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has taken a giant step forward in the health care of those renting part of a multi-family home in the Kalamazoo, MI area. The Kalamazoo, MI area is known to have sections of high levels of radon gas, and without a proper mitigation system installed, the side effects are deadly. Every year 21,000 people die from radon gas in the form of radon lung cancer. It is a true tragedy as a properly installed mitigation system can help remove the gas, and make your Kalamazoo home a safe environment.
Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and is responsible for roughly 15% of all lung cancer cases. This means that there is a serious threat to you and your family without a properly installed mitigation system. Because this gas is odorless, and colorless, there is no way that you will be able to know whether or not your Kalamazoo home is in need of mitigation without a test.
Renting a multi-family home in Kalamazoo means that you are subject to the safety that the landlord deems is adequate. This means that you will not always be able to have a mitigation system installed unless you want to fork out the money on a home that you are renting. Luckily the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, is taking the precautions for many renting homes.
HUD Regulation for Radon Lung Cancer
HUD has started to regulate radon gas by forcing every multi-family home that is financed through HUD to have a radon test. Any of these homes that return a high level of gas on their test will be forced to have a mitigation system installed to reduce their levels of gas. With this regulation in place, the safety of many will be ensured as radon mitigation systems are installed on Kalamazoo homes that need it.
HUD is part of a much greater movement that is working to improve the safety of homes throughout the United States. The group is referred to as Federal Healthy Homes Work Group, and is made up of the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and of course HUD. These organizations combine together to create strong initiatives for improvement in home safety.
The American Lung Association is extremely excited of this news as this will truly benefit many residents in Kalamazoo and across the nation. In addition to the benefited health from a mitigation system in regard to removing radon, the American Lung Association also points out that these air purification systems further improve lung health,in addition to reducing radon lung cancer by removing moisture and providing increased ventilation in the home. S.W.A.T. Environmental is proud of the efforts and accomplishments of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and looks forward to helping many tenants breathe clean air.
